Charles Esten is breaking his silence after his former Nashville costar Hayden Panettiere died at the age of 36 just days after she reportedly attended one of his shows. "Patty [Hanson, his wife] and I are stunned and saddened at the loss of our dear and beautiful friend Hayden," Esten, 60, wrote via Instagram on Monday, August 17. Esten starred alongside Panettiere in the hit ABC series, which aired from 2012 until 2016 and concluded with its final two seasons on CMT from 2016 until 2018. Panettiere starred as rising country music star Juliette Barnes, while Esten portrayed songwriter Deacon Claybourne. "I will never forget the first time I met her," Esten continued. "In a sound stage office in Hollywood, I was finishing up my very first Nashville audition. I had read two Deacon scenes before pulling out my guitar and singing two songs. I said my goodbyes and, hoping I’d done well, went to open the door to leave. Instead of swinging all the way out, the door bumped into somebody. Kinda hard." He went on, "To my complete surprise, It was Hayden Panettiere, who — in full Juliette Barnes mode — had been listening with her ear to the door. Instead of looking even a little bit caught, her face instantly bloomed into the most beautiful smile. Eyes twinkling, she clapped her hands and said, 'That was so good!!'" Esten recalled the way Panettiere supported him in that potentially embarrassing moment. "I can promise you that in that moment, there was nothing in the world I needed to hear more than that. I told her that, along with my Heroes-watching family, I was already a big fan of hers, and that I was grateful for the very kind words. It was her turn to go in, so as I went to leave, I said a jokingly cocky, 'See you on the set!'” He added, "I was, of course, many auditions away from landing that incredible role. But when I finally did, and showed up in Nashville to start work, she walked right up to me, pointed in my face, and with that magical grin said, 'See you on the set!'” Esten recalled that he and the late became "fast friends," often "having fun and laughing a whole lot" in between shooting emotionally charged Nashville scenes. "She was, of course, extraordinarily talented, infusing her larger-than-life character with all the heart, charisma, humor, whip-smart intelligence, and flat-out magic that were, alongside whatever troubles and pain she carried, a part of her own personal palette," he noted. "What a great gift it was to act with her, sing with her, and to just be her friend. She was always extremely kind to my family, especially my wife, Patty, who I’m certain she liked even more than me." "Together, we are heartbroken that she is gone, and praying for her family, and for all those who, like us, will miss and mourn her so dearly," he concluded. "God bless you, Hayden. Rest In Peace and Light" Us previously reported that Panettiere died on Sunday, August 16, at an apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina, from a suspected overdose. A resident of the building exclusively told Us that a neighbor shared with them that one of Panettiere’s friends was playing at The Foundry on Friday, August 14. The music venue is attached to the apartment building, which was why Panettiere was at the complex. The resident said she was staying at an Airbnb in the complex, and “there was more than one person staying” in the unit. Esten was booked to perform two nights at the venue as part of his Carolina Tour. Panettiere died one day after his last show at The Foundry. Authorities in South Carolina confirmed to Us on Monday, August 17, that police responded to reports of an “unresponsive female” at a residence, later identified at Panettiere. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office also confirmed to Us on Monday that an official autopsy had been completed, and there were no signs of trauma that may have contributed to Panettiere’s death. “On August 16, 2026, at approximately 1:51 PM, a 911 call was received regarding a reported cardiac arrest,” a statement from the Greenville County Coroner’s Office read. “First responders and Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene and located a female in cardiac arrest. EMS personnel initiated advanced cardiac life support measures; however, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and the individual was pronounced deceased at 2:32 PM.” Esten and Panettiere grew close while working on Nashville, and they remained friends for years after the show wrapped. Back in 2018, Esten exclusively spoke to Us about his bond with the Ice Princess star, recalling that they'd been "buddies ever since" they started working together.

911 dispatch audio following the death of Hayden Panettiere has apparently revealed the cause of her sudden passing. Panettiere was found unresponsive at a South Carolina residence before her death at age 36, with emergency dispatch audio reportedly referring to an apparent “overdose.” Emergency personnel were called to a residence in Greenville on Sunday afternoon following reports of an “unidentified female” in “cardiac arrest.” Dispatch audio obtained by Page Six indicated that “CPR [was] in progress” within minutes of the call. Panettiere was pronounced dead after responders attempted advanced life support. Her official cause of death has not yet been released. Police have said the preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the actress' death. Responders attempted to resuscitate the actress using advanced cardiac life support and chest compressions. The 23-year-old is under the spotlight after allegations have been made that her AI shopping assistant, Phia, has been engaged in 'cookie stuffing'. An expert has now delved into what this may mean if the allegations are proven to be true. 'Cookie stuffing' is an illegal practice where unrelated tracking cookies are inserted into a user's browser by an affiliate marketer, without their consent. According to Branch , this happens after a user views a page or clicks on a single link. Essentially, secretly planting cookies is a method of getting credit for somebody else's online sale, and now Phoebe and her friend Sophia Kianni could be found guilty of doing so. But just last month, Bloomberg released a report claiming that the AI company received attribution for purchases it had not driven, and alleged that it was involved in cookie stuffing. The company told the outlet that they were made aware of the misattributions 'in the last 24 hours'. Phia have since released a statement to PEOPLE , reading: “Any features causing misattributions were immediately removed over a month ago on July 7. "We are reviewing every transaction, we are fully committed to and have already begun issuing all transaction reversals to brand partners as a result of any misattribution, and we are hiring a head of compliance to make sure something like this never happens again. “We are now continuing to connect our users with items and offers from thousands of brand partners,” the spokesperson continued. “We will learn from this and want to ensure our users have the best possible shopping experience, with features like our new digital closet and more to come.” Legal expert outlines potential punishments Star Kashman, the founding partner of Cyber Law Firm, explained how much prison time could be dished out for the offense. The legal expert explained to the New York Post : “Wire fraud would have to paint a picture of a knowing scheme that is organized to defraud these individuals (affiliates, businesses, etc.) of their money." He added that 'wire fraud carries a statutory maximum of 20 years in prison,' though prosecutors would need to prove that the founders (Phoebe and Sophia) 'knowingly participated in a scheme to defraud'. Kashman admitted that the most likely penalties would be financial for the pair, highlighting that it would be 'very unlikely' for the young entrepreneurs to be imprisoned for 20 years for the allegations on a first offence. But if the allegations are true, then there is a possibility that they would be taken to court, but as it stands, Phia has not been charged with any criminal wrongdoing. She explained that cookie stuffing is essentially 'treated as federal wire fraud in US courts', and that 'there’s a possibility of a max penalty of up to 20 years prison + fines/restitution.' The expert also spoke about punishments which befell previous culprits, naming some examples. She said that Shawn Hogan, who was a 'top eBay affiliate', pleaded guilty and received five months federal prison time and a $25,000 fine. Brian Dunning, who was the owner of online marketing company Kessler’s Flying Circus, pleaded guilty and was punished with a 15-month prison sentence. "I feel like I have a lot more life to live,” she added. Hayden’s father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed to Us on Sunday, August 16, that the actress had died in Greenville, South Carolina. “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. A cause of death has not yet been revealed. Hayden made her acting debut as a child, appearing on the soap operas One Life to Live and Guiding Light. Her breakthrough TV moment came when she starred as Claire Bennet on Heroes in 2006. The actress is also known for the 2012 drama series Nashville and the films Remember the Titans (2000) and Ice Princess (2005), the latter of which she starred in alongside Michelle Trachtenberg, who died at age 39 in February 2025. Hayden took a hiatus from acting in 2018 while struggling with postpartum depression after welcoming her daughter, Kaya, with ex Wladimir Klitschko four years prior. KOLD NEWSA woman who rushed in to help was also caught in the powerful current and swept downstream, turning the rescue attempt into another emergency.Good Samaritans eventually managed to pull the victims from the water.The 20-year-old woman was reportedly unresponsive after being rescued and required CPR before she survived the ordeal.Others in the group quickly rushed in to try to save her as the good Samaritan rescuers frantically worked together to try and pull her out.However, one of them ended up being swallowed up by the rising waters and dragged downstream herself some 100 feet before she was eventually rescued.A female cyclist attempted to cross a flooded bridge in Arizona and miraculously survived being pulled under the water as one of her rescuers became a victim herself. KOLD NEWSThe video shows one minute she’s next to the group and the next moment the woman was completely underwater only to come up on the other side of the bridge, chest-deep in the water, trying to get out.“She takes a step back from the rescue efforts as others are trying to say, and she goes underwater and disappears,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said.Video shared by an eyewitness showed the woman stuck in a hole struggling to get out before she was quickly sucked down under the water, ABC 13“And the video pans out to the right downstream, and that tunnel that she disappeared into literally just threw her out another 100 feet down.”“That’s how powerful that force is,” Nanos added.The first woman was underwater for several minutes before she was eventually pulled out of the water and CPR was started until she regained consciousness, the office said in a post.“Deputies arrived and assisted the subject out of the drainage.”Others in the group quickly rushed in to try to save her as the good Samaritan rescuers frantically worked together to try and pull her out.
