College Soccer Star's Tragic End Shocks Community as Dark Details Emerge

Promising collegiate soccer player Karoline Heintz was allegedly stabbed to death and stuffed into the trunk of a Jeep by her boyfriend – whose mother has been charged with helping cover up the act.  Royce Moser was charged with criminal homicide, two counts of tampering with evidence, two counts of abuse of a corpse and obstruction on Thursday, August 20.  Heintz, an 18-year-old incoming freshman at Pennsylvania Western University, met up with Moser outside his father’s home in North Strabane Township, Pennsylvania, on the evening of Wednesday, August 19, according to police.  “They’re a younger couple talking about how relationships can continue maybe in a college setting,” Pennsylvania State Trooper Rocco Gagliardi said at a news conference on Thursday. “Somewhere that conversation probably goes a little bit south. Toward the end of that conversation between boyfriend and girlfriend, he goes inside and grabs a large knife from the kitchen.” After returning to Heintz’s vehicle, Moser, also 18, allegedly stabbed her to death in the chest. Moser then allegedly stuffed his girlfriend’s body in the back hatch of her Jeep and drove to his mother’s home in nearby Beallsville for help.  “They tried to clean clothes, tried to clean the car up, tried to get rid of any bloodstains possible and then proceeded to take that vehicle with the mother tailing all the way down to California Borough,” Gagliardi said. When Heintz failed to check in with her family on Wednesday evening, they requested a wellness check. Her phone location placed her at a library in California, Pennsylvania, a short drive from the home of Royce’s mother, Rachel Moser, and near Pennsylvania Western University. Authorities descended on the library, where they found Heintz's dead body in the Jeep.  Rachel was also arrested on Thursday and charged with hindering the apprehension of a fugitive, tampering with evidence and related charges. According to a criminal complaint obtained by CBS News, Royce said he had “a demon take over” before killing Heintz.  Rachel told reporters she “did not” help her son cover up the murder, but said she was “sorry.” When pressed to explain why she was sympathetic, she said, “That my son took a life.” At the time of publication, Royce and Rachel have not entered pleas and do not have counsel. Pennsylvania Western University (also known as PennWest University) issued a statement about Heintz on Thursday.  “PennWest University is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Karoline Heintz, who was a first-year student at the California campus,” the school said. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends and all those affected by this tragedy.” The PennWest women’s soccer team opens their season on August 29.

Jam Press/National TrustMore than 44 pounds of coin — totaling around 10,000 pieces — were removed from the Giant’s Causeway, a natural landmark in County Antrim, Ireland, that’s comprised of over 40,000 basalt columns. These were molded over 60 million years ago, when molten lava seeped down into crevices in Earth before cooling, contracting and fragmenting into these otherworldly shapes.While these iconic formations have stood the test of time, they were no match for the waves of”tourons,” who have been hammering sheckles into the rocks for presumed good luck — like a terrestrial wishing well. Visitors have been jamming coins into the Causeway for years, but the behavior has ramped up recently, prompting fears that they could cause serious damage.The damp, salty conditions corrode the metal, causing it to expand inside the cracks and put a strain on the surrounding stone.Following a damning report from the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland, the National Trust began their ambitious coin collection project, even enlisting specialist stonemason Nathan Morrow to remove the caustic currency sans causing more damage.Coins are seen hammered into the crevices of the Giant’s Causeway. Jam Press/National TrustHe reportedly used pliers to collect the coins from the rock’s edge while a gripping tool was required for some of the more deeply-wedged denominations.The work was painstaking, with some of the loose change “popping out” easily while other pieces took more than 20 minutes to extract.“It was fiddly work, it was frustrating work,” Dr. Henry told the BBC while detailing Morrow’s unenviable task. “Some coins were quite stuck. Jam Press/National TrustBut unlike with a coin game winner, the retrieval team didn’t hit the jackpot.“The coins corrode so quickly in the salty, damp conditions at the Causeway that it becomes impossible to detect what currency it was, never mind the date on it after just a few years,” said Henry. “The oldest coin that I have seen was dated 1999, but may have been placed much later than that year.He added, “Only about 5% of the coins extracted are usable currency; the rest are either too bent or too corroded.”“There are several thousand coins still wedged in the joints,” said Dr. Henry (pictured). Jam Press/National TrustThe official said that 95% of the haul were either UK pounds or Euros, while the second most common currency was the US dollar.Despite the monumental cleanup campaign, which ended in June, many coins were ultimately too difficult to extract both because of their depth and degree of corrosion.“There are several thousand coins still wedged in the joints,” lamented Henry. “Others are too badly rusted to get them to move without causing significant damage to the stones. Better left to corrode away in time.”To make matters worse, visitors have begun their desecrating contributions anew with Henry claiming that he removed another 42 coins last month.The Trust has since posted warning signs imploring sightseers not to jam and more money into the rocks. “Please don’t put these coins in,” pleaded Henry. “If you want to do something with your coin, stick it in the charity box and we can use that money for good purposes.The organization is mulling a way to turn their coin collection into an exhibit to raise awareness of their plight.

Emma Thompson’s mom Phyllida Law has died. She was 94. "It is with great sadness we have to announce that Phyllida Law died supremely peacefully at home, surrounded by all of her family, on Monday 27th July," Law’s manager Jacky Leggo said in a statement to BBC News on Tuesday, August 18. “We had worked together for over fifty years and she was a beautiful person inside and out.” Law was the mother of daughters Emma, 67, and Sophie Thompson, whom she shared with late husband Eric Thompson. (Law and Eric tied the knot in 1957 and the couple were together until his death in 1982 at age 53.) Emma previously shared that she and her mom formed a strong bond after the death of her father. (Emma was 21 at the time of her father’s death.) “Now I think if my father was still alive, it would be very different,” the Love Actually actress told the Hollywood Foreign Press in May 2021. “I mean, we know mum so much better because we spent so much time together, we started going on holidays and traveling together, and we all live on the same street, within three doors of each other.” The Oscar winner continued, “We’re far closer-knit because of that event in our lives, also we’re three actresses who always had to earn our own living, we’ve never been supported by anyone. My mum always worked, I always worked when I was married, and my sister works. So that’s created quite a strong kind of triumvirate. It’s a little alarming, actually.” Both Emma and Sophie, 64, followed in their mother’s footsteps, who was a formidable actress in the 1960s. Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy addressed reporters for the first time since his wife, Mia, was allegedly shot by the couple’s son. “First and foremost I want to say this: thank you guys for all the love and support,” he said in a press conference at Chiefs training camp on Tuesday, August 18. “Obviously the unfortunate circumstances which took place [are] very hurtful in a way, but on top of that, I just respect that you guys are respecting our privacy, and hats off to you.” Bieniemy, 57, continued, “I would also like to say thank you to the Hunt family [owners of the Chiefs], the entire Chiefs family, for the outpouring of love and support my family has received through this particular situation. With all that said, we’re back to football and I’m all ears.” The Chiefs coordinator spent two weeks away from the team after Mia, was injured in a shooting at the family’s home in Virginia on July 26. He returned to practice on August 10. Their son, Elijah, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside of a dwelling. Elijah, 27, was transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center where he remains. Mia, 57, is “on the road to recovery,” Eric told reporters. “She is doing great,” he added, also noting that Mia gave him the OK to return to the team. “She's truly a soldier and a saint, and it's been incredible to watch.” As the Chiefs continue their training camp, the team is now preparing for its second preseason opponent, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, whom they will face on Saturday, August 22. Head coach Andy Reid told reporters last week that Eric was hard at work. “It’s good to have EB back,” he said. “He’s ‌back in the fold and I don’t think he missed a step, man. He was out there and getting after it. That’s a positive for the offensive side.” Reid, 68, continued, “I’ve talked to him several times a day, so I knew he was coming back if everything worked out the way he had been. A new police report shines a new light on who discovered Hayden Panettiere during the final moments of her life. According to a Greenville City Police Department incident report obtained by Us, officials spoke with Panettiere’s ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother, Zach Hickerson, at an apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina, on the day of her passing. “After EMS officially declared Hayden deceased, I escorted Zach and Brian out of the apartment,” the police report stated about the events that took place on Sunday, August 16. “I observed Zach to be very emotional while EMS were working on Hayden. Brian did not become emotional until EMS declared her officially deceased.” While speaking to an officer on the scene, Zach said the actress “was his brother’s girlfriend.” According to the report, Brian provided a “bag of medication” that Panettiere was “currently on,” per the redacted report. The police report indicated that police executed a search warrant and there is CCTV footage of all three individuals coming and going from the apartment. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office also revealed to Us on Monday that an autopsy report has been completed and no signs of trauma were discovered that could have contributed to the actress’ death. “On August 16, 2026, at approximately 1:51 PM, a 911 call was received regarding a reported cardiac arrest,” the Greenville County Coroner’s Office said in a statement. “First responders and Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene and located a female in cardiac arrest. EMS personnel initiated advanced cardiac life support measures; however, resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and the individual was pronounced deceased at 2:32 PM.” As fans wait for more details about what led to Panettiere’s death, a source who recently spoke with the Nashville actress told Us that friends were “worried” about the actress after she reconnected with her abusive ex. “Hayden seemed to be doing well [recently], but there was still concern among her friends and inner circle, especially because she started spending time with Brian again,” a source explained to Us. “That relationship and association had led her down a dark path in the past, so her friends and inner circle were worried for her. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” he said in a statement to Us. “We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.” The Greenville Police Department and Greenville County Coroner’s Office confirmed that officers responded to reports of an “unresponsive female” at a South Carolina residence, later identified as Hayden, and a possible “drug overdose.” First responders and EMS found a woman in cardiac arrest at the scene and performed “advanced cardiac life support measures,” but she was pronounced dead that afternoon. An investigation is ongoing. Authorities noted that there have not been “any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.” An autopsy found that “no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death,” the coroner’s office confirmed. The cause and manner of Panettiere’s death “remain pending further investigation and the completion of additional studies.” Earlier this week, Spy Kids star Alexa PenaVega — another former child actress and friend of Panettiere’s — paid tribute to the Nashville alum and reflected on the struggles of fame at a young age. “Hayden, Michelle [Trachtenberg], Daveigh [Chase] ... my heart is heavy today,” PenaVega, 37, wrote via Instagram on Monday, August 17. “These aren't just names from my childhood.
