Amber Uhler's Journey from Trampoline Pit Humiliation to Miss USA Stage
Tonight, Miss Michigan Amber Uhler will stand on stage in Miami, Florida, waiting to hear if her name is called as the winner of the Miss USA pageant.It’s quite a different look than five years ago, when she weighed 300 pounds and a doctor warned her that she was on her way “to an early grave.”Following those words of caution — and a humiliating experience at a trampoline park — Uhler, 41, decided to lose the weight for good. Instagram/amber.uhlerFive years ago, Uhler was morbidly obese and prediabetic when she got a double wakeup call.First, her doctor told her that due to her health, she likely wouldn’t live to see her kids graduate college. Days later, at a trampoline park with her kids, she found herself stuck in a foam pit.“It didn’t cross my mind that I might not be able to get out. I didn’t realize how much my weight was limiting me until I was waist-deep in that pit, completely stuck,” she told Canvas Rebel. “I tried everything to pull myself out — pushing, grabbing, crawling — but my body simply wouldn’t cooperate.”“Three big, beefy muscle men formed a human chain to try to pull me out, and even they couldn’t do it, and they thought they were going to have to call the fire department,” she added to People. “I’ve never been so humiliated in my life.”Losing 170 poundsUhler, like many women, struggled with a body changed by childbirth. She’d had three kids in four years and found she was living a “half-life,” unable to even climb the stairs in her home.That doctor’s visit “saved her life” she told FOX 13. She knew she needed to make a huge change.“I knew I wanted to lose a crazy amount of weight, and I knew I needed to have a crazy goal to go along with it,” she said.That crazy goal was to compete in a beauty pageant, which she committed to. “I knew I was going to have to be dedicated regimented and not give up even when I fell off the wagon. It was hard and I woke up with a dozen Krispy Kremes in my bed, I had to get back on the horse. Always start again.”Uhler found that she was struggling with weight and physical health after having three kids in four years. That said, she still incorporated more movement into her life, from walks with kids to playing at the park.“So I began. Small steps. Daily walks,” she told Canvas Rebel. “Crying through workouts. Relearning discipline. Forgiving myself when I failed. Recommitting the next morning. Over and over and over again.Instead, her transformation was almost entirely thanks to changes to her diet.While she tried programs like Weight Watchers, she ultimately found that Jenny Craig worked for her best. The system of having pre-portioned meals delivered every two weeks eliminated guesswork and prevented overeating, which was a problem for her.Amber Uhler lost 170 pounds through lifestyle changes. In 2024, she became Mrs. Florida Universe, and in 2025, became Mrs. Universe USA.This year, she was appointed Miss Michigan USA and will compete this week for the 75th annual Miss USA pageant.At 41, she is this year’s oldest Miss USA contestant and her “confidence is soaring.” “I thought I was going to get here, and I was going to show up and see the 20-somethings and feel so insecure, but they’ve all rallied behind me,” she said.She’s emphasized that she never set out to lose the amount of weight she did — or even win a crown. She wanted to share the message that “stories can be rewritten.”“I know what it’s like to feel like you don’t have a chance, you can’t make a difference, and you are unseen,” she told FOX 13. “I want to prove to everyone that you can rewrite your own story and that you can become your best self.”
