Chris Johnson's Heartfelt Letter Sparks Conversations About NFL and ALS

Former Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson is reflecting on his NFL career — and the potential role it had in his ALS diagnosis. Johnson, 40, published a letter to his four kids in the Players’ Tribune on Thursday, September 10, where he drew a link between his football days and his diagnosis, which he went public with in June. “I’ve seen a lot of neurologists at this point and been to basically every major ALS clinic in the country, and in my experience, as soon as you say you played football it’s like, ‘Ahh, OK,’” he wrote. “Almost like an understanding, you know? I read one study, and from my understanding, it found that former NFL players were nearly four times as likely to develop and pass away from ALS compared with the U.S. male population overall. That was a shock.” He added, “And to be clear, your dad’s not an expert, and that’s just one study, and there might be other environmental factors at play. Anybody can get ALS. But obviously, I can’t help but wonder if there’s any connection between my career and where I am now.” Chris and his wife, Brittany, share four kids, who he addressed as Honey Buns, CJ, Kaden and Lee in his letter. A three-time Pro Bowler, Chris played 10 seasons in the NFL, mostly with the Titans, and was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2009. He retired in 2017. Almost a decade later, Chris is not looking to discourage his kids from playing football, despite the possible connection to his ALS. “Your football journey is yours,” he wrote. “Be fearless, be you, and don’t let anyone stand in the way of your dreams. The game is a lot safer now than when I was playing. And hopefully it just keeps on getting safer.” Chris first shared his diagnosis in an appearance on Good Morning America alongside his wife, who said she is still holding out hope for a miracle. “All I could think about was our kids and how young they are,” she said. “You’re in denial. You want it to be anything else. You want the doctors to be wrong. The life that we previously had is now a thing of the past. But we’re still hopeful. We’re hopeful that a breakthrough will happen, or that a miracle will happen.” Chris also sent a message to his kids that day, telling them via Instagram that “I love you more than you’ll ever know.” “You’ve stepped into responsibilities no child should ever have to carry,” he wrote. “You’ve helped take care of me, encouraged me on the hard days, and reminded me every day why I refuse to give up. Watching you shoulder a burden that isn’t fair has been one of the hardest parts of the journey, but you’ve done it with so much love. Everything I do is for you.”

I don't know what she's going to do, but that's my prayer for her.” According to Kelly, it has been “very painful” to watch her “dear friend” suffer and deal with critics in a time of grief. “The overwhelming suffering has been caused by Charlie's murder and not by the internet nonsense, but that's been an added burden on her,” she claimed to host Piers Morgan. “There's no question, and I don't like it. I wish it weren't happening. I wish people would move on and just see the evidence that's there.” Kelly continued, “But I think part of the reason this is happening is because Erika stayed in the public eye as the CEO of Turning Point, and therefore, in some ways, criticism of her is fair game.” While Kelly said the conspiracy theories surrounding Charlie’s death are “all nonsense to me,” the criticisms of Erika's behavior or public appearances are more fair game if she’s the head of a political organization. “People who think that she's not grieving correctly. Look, all I can say, they're entitled to their opinions. I don't share their opinions, but I can't censor their opinions either,” she said. “The way Erika could avoid that is by not being the CEO of Turning Point, and she and I have had many conversations about this together.” Founded in 2012, Turning Point USA is a nonprofit organization that advocates for conservative politics on high school, college and university campuses. One goal is “to empower generations of patriots to stand for freedom, defend liberty and win the American culture war.” “I think she feels very strongly that she was the only one who could get the organization through at least the first year,” Kelly said in her latest interview. “And she's done that — miraculously and heroically, she's done that.” Charlie was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. He was 31 years old. Accused killer Tyler Robinson was later arrested and charged with aggravated murder and six other counts. He has pleaded not guilty. Days before the first anniversary of Charlie’s death, Erika, 37, penned a personal op-ed for The New York Times about grief. “I am still learning how to walk through each day carrying the grief I feel for my Charlie. Some days I have a vague understanding of God’s plan, others I don’t, but I trust Him completely,” she wrote via X on Monday, September 7. “He is my only strength. I also know grief can be lonely, and sometimes hearing someone else put words to it makes us feel a little less alone. … Suffering does not get the final word. Only God does.”

United Airlines' Dubai Flights Suspended Until 2027: What’s Behind the Delay?

The world’s largest airline is delaying its return to this popular travel destination until next year.With persisting conflict in the Middle East, United Airlines, among others, suspended flights to Dubai International Airport back in February. United has now revealed it will not resume direct flights to the popular destination until at least March 2027.In March 2026, United Airlines Flight 164 from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) was headed to Dubai, but was forced to turn back after Israel attacked Iran and prompted the closure of Iranian airspace. United suggests booking with its partner airline, Emirates, which still flies to Dubai from major US hubs. Luiz C. Ribeiro for New York PostSince then, United Airlines has issued a travel warning for flights in the Middle East, considering the U.S. Department of State currently has both the United Arab Emirates and Israel under “Reconsider Travel” advisories. Dubai airport had restricted foreign airlines to just one daily flight to its airport until May 31 due to the Iran crisis but lifted this policy on May 31. Still, airlines are wary of the immediate reinstatement of their flights.United also suspended its route from San Francisco to Tel Aviv in late February 2026 in light of the Middle Eastern conflict, but announced it is resuming flights between EWR and Tel Aviv on Sep. 8.The airline won’t restart its Newark route to Dubai, despite its popularity among American visitors. Last year, over 1.4 million Americans visited Dubai, constituting 7% of the city’s overnight visitors. PYOK suggests that since Dubai is much closer to Iran, it is at more risk of kamikaze drones and missile attacks, despite local officials reporting very few attacks in territorial waters rather than the city itself. Flight cancellations and complications have been consistent this year globally. Back in January, major airlines cancelled flights across the Middle East due to anxieties that the US was preparing to strike Iran. Flights to Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia were all suspended by various European airlines, with continued suspension to Israel in mid-March. When service was still running, United operated a daily flight from EWR to Dubai: Flight UA164 departed from Terminal C every evening to Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport. Several non-U.S. and non-UAE airlines (such as Lufthansa, British Airways, and Air Canada) have suspended or delayed their own regional service resumptions into parts of the Middle East through late October 2026 or January 2027.
