Christa Pike's Failed Execution Sparks Outrage After Surviving Two Lethal Injections New

Christa Pike's Failed Execution Sparks Outrage After Surviving Two Lethal Injections

Death row inmate Christa Pike survived a failed execution attempt after being administered two lethal injections, her lawyer said. Pike, 50, was transported to a Tennessee hospital after the attempted execution on Wednesday, September 30. In an emergency motion to halt the execution on Wednesday, her legal team said, “Ms. Pike has lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat and is audibly snoring.” An attorney for the convicted murderer told the BBC that she was “being provided life-saving measures” at a Tennessee hospital after being injected with two syringes of pentobarbital. The Tennessee Department of Correction told NBC News that Pike was “transported to an off-site medical facility” following Wednesday’s execution attempt at Riverbend Maximum Security Prison in Nashville. “The Tennessee Department of Correction followed every step of the state's lawful, established execution protocol approved by the Attorney General’s Office,” a TDOC spokesperson told The Tennessean newspaper. “The lethal injection chemical in the protocol has consistently been effective, and the protocol does not allow for additional procedures beyond what was carried out this evening.” Pike is the sole woman on death row in Tennessee and was expected to be the first woman executed in the state in more than 200 years, per historical records. In 1996, Pike was convicted of the murder of classmate Colleen Slemmer. Slemmer’s mother, May Martinez, who attended the attempted execution, told NBC News, “It was a mess.” Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said in a statement, “Carrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the state's most serious responsibilities, and the people of Tennessee expect it to be done in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional but is effective. I have ordered a comprehensive, third-party review to determine exactly what occurred.” “Tonight the State of Tennessee once again failed to carry out a lawful execution,” Pike’s legal team told The Tennessean. “We take no pleasure in being right, but the concerns raised by Ms. Pike proved to be true: difficult vein access, blown veins, degraded pentobarbital, no emergency medical care available when things inevitably go wrong, all under a protocol that remains veiled in secrecy.” Earlier on Wednesday, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit stayed Pike’s execution just an hour before it was due to take place at 10 a.m. local time. However, the U.S. Supreme Court later overruled that decision, allowing the execution to go ahead.

Why Sunny Hostin's Defense of a DA Is Stirring Controversy New

Why Sunny Hostin's Defense of a DA Is Stirring Controversy

The View cohost Sunny Hostin is defending a district attorney for not bringing charges against several Cornell University fraternity members accused of gang raping a fellow student in 2024. “I have the statement that Jane Doe wrote at that time. It’s several pages long,” Hostin, 57, claimed during the Tuesday, September 29, episode of ABC’s hit daytime talk show. “I will say that under current New York state law, voluntary intoxication or drug use — and she voluntarily drank a lot and she voluntarily snorted ketamine off of one of the boy’s body parts — she allowed other boys and consented to other boys snorting ketamine off of her body.” The former federal prosecutor continued, “Under New York law, voluntary intoxication or drug use that merely impairs judgment does not legally constitute an inability to consent to sexual activity.” Hostin went on to say that she understood why Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten didn’t bring charges to a group of fraternity brothers after the alleged 2024 assault. “If you voluntarily ingest drugs, voluntarily take alcohol, you can agree to have threesomes, which, in her statement, she agreed to have two separate threesomes,” Hostin claimed. “One young man did walk in and say, ‘Everybody out.’ So there was one person who did that. According to her statement, three of the young men did not touch her.” In the wake of her polarizing take, Hostin made it clear that Jane Doe’s new lawsuit should absolutely be investigated and taken seriously. At the same time, she advised viewers during The View’s Hot Topics segment to investigate more than just headlines before jumping to conclusions. “I say all of that to say the pictures of these young men who have not been charged — not been adjudicated — are being plastered all over the internet,” she said. “I think people are reporting this story inaccurately. I think they’re reporting it unfairly.” Hostin continued, “While this is something that we have to take very seriously, there is no way, according to her statement in 2024, that any prosecutor would’ve brought forth a case.” Jane Doe, a former student at the Ivy League school, sued Cornell and seven male fraternity members, alleging that she was drugged and sexually assaulted for at least seven hours in October 2024 at the Chi Phi fraternity house in Ithaca, New York. No arrests have been made in connection with the case, and the local district attorney has said he is reopening the case in light of the civil suit and leaked messages from a snapchat group message advertising “free p****,” the derogatory term for female genitalia, at the time of the alleged assault. Attorneys representing the named fraternity members have vigorously denied the claims in the lawsuit. “Jane Doe’s sworn statement in November of 2024 did not allege that she was drugged against her will or gang raped. On the contrary, Jane Doe’s statement described her participation in drug use and sexual conduct as voluntary, conscious, and consensual,” Van Houten said in a statement. “My office obviously did not and could not have based our November 2024 decision on the allegations in a civil lawsuit that would not be filed until nearly two years later. Furthermore, I have never been contacted by Jane Doe’s attorneys.” The attorney for Jane Doe has disputed Van Houten’s description of the alleged victim’s initial statement and faulted authorities for never following up with his client. "In my experience, speaking with an abuse survivor requires delicacy, understanding and specialized training,” attorney Thomas P. Giuffra told ABC News. “An average University Police officer would not have these skills. It would be the role of a specially trained detective or district attorney. However, Ms. Doe was never contacted by anybody with those skills.” Cornell University said in a statement that it takes allegations of sexual violence "extremely seriously" and that its Office of Civil Rights and Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards "investigated and adjudicated the allegations consistent with university policies." "Any suggestion that the University did not impose consequential punishments for those involved is false," Cornell said in September via ABC News. "A continuation of the false narrative that there were minimal consequences in this case is irresponsible, will make survivors feel less safe and supported, and will perpetuate the underreporting of sexual assault." If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, contact the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673).

After earning a 12 out of 30 from judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough and Bruno Tonioli, Zaikman and Leavitt were eliminated from the competition on premiere night. “This has been the most fun,” Leavitt said earlier this month. “I have the greatest partner in the world in Adele [and] I can’t wait for the world to get to see her talents.”

Hidden Van Gogh and Cézanne Masterpieces Unveiled After 50 Years

See more of our coverage in your search results. A dozen Impressionist and post-Impressionist artworks collectively valued at almost half a billion dollars are going up for auction after sitting unseen for decades in a fabled private collection in South America.Sotheby’s auction house said Wednesday that works by Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne are expected to smash records for the artists in the Nov. 18 sale in New York. If so, it would be the latest sign that, in uncertain times, ultrawealthy art collectors are seeking security in masterpieces.Paul Cezanne’s ‘Arlequin’ is on display during a preview of the Blaquier-Arrieta Collection at Sotheby’s in London, Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026. ZUMAPRESS.comVincent van Gogh’s painting “Chataigniers en fleurs,” painted in May 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, is shown. The work and other pieces have not been seen in public in decades. Sotheby's New York/Blaquier-Arrieta collectionThe paintings come from a collection amassed by the late Argentine art collector Nelly Arrieta de Blaquier and her sugar magnate husband, Carlos Pedro Blaquier, and are being sold by their children. They include van Gogh’s landscape “Châtaigniers en fleurs,” (Chestnut Trees in Flower) estimated at $180 million, and Cézanne’s portrait “Arlequin,” which carries an estimate of $120 million. Neither has been seen in public for half a century.Helena Newman, Sotheby’s head of Impressionist and modern art, said the collection was like a “mini- Musée D’Orsay,” the Paris museum that holds one of the world’s greatest collections of Impressionist and post-Impressionist artworks.“In my 30-plus years at Sotheby’s, I’ve never had the privilege of handling a collection of quite this content and caliber,” she said.Newman said van Gogh’s painting of flowering chestnut trees captures the “explosion of energy and vitality” the artist felt after his release from a psychiatric asylum in May 1890. He took his own life two months later.Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s painting “En Canon (Jeune fille a la barque)” is displayed during a preview of the Blaquier-Arrieta Collection at Sotheby’s in London, Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026. ZUMAPRESS.comThe Cézanne portrait is one of four paintings of the artist’s son dressed as the Harlequin figure from clowning. The other three are in major museums. Also in the collection are Parisian cityscapes by Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, a horse-racing image by Edgar Degas and a boating scene by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, all valued in the tens of millions of dollars.Art expert Philip Hook, a former Sotheby’s auctioneer, said the collection “really is the stuff of legend,” because the collectors did not loan out the works for exhibitions.Claude Monet’s painting “Le Jardin des Tuileries” is on display during a preview of the Blaquier-Arrieta Collection at Sotheby’s in London, Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026. ZUMAPRESS.com“No one knew really what was in it. So now, for this to be revealed, is tremendously exciting,” Hook said.“They came out with a collection that, rather cleverly, is focused on getting one representative work by each of the major names (of Impressionist and post-Impressionist art), and that is incredibly difficult to do,” he added. “They succeeded with huge, huge style and success.”Newman said sale is likely to attract global attention, with potential buyers ranging from American tech billionaires to well-endowed Middle Eastern institutions and rich collectors from North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.“In times where there’s a lot of global macro geopolitical uncertainty, it’s almost like there’s a return to really established, tried and tested” works that are “unquestionably great,” Newman said.“(This) museum-quality Impressionist collection … is pretty rare.”

Julie Chen Moonves Surprises Fans with Her Change of Heart on Rick Devens New

Julie Chen Moonves Surprises Fans with Her Change of Heart on Rick Devens

Big Brother host Julie Chen Moonves has had a change of heart after being critical of houseguest Rick Devens’ gameplay. “I like him. You can't not like Rick Devens, so I've been humbled,” Chen Moonves, 56, exclusively shared with Us before the Thursday, October 1, finale of CBS’ hit reality show. “Look, no one can be a performative phony for 87 days straight, especially in a show like Big Brother with the live feeds. You can't be a phony for that long. He's someone who it’s very easy to root for him.” When Big Brother 28 kicked off in July, Chen Moonves was not the biggest cheerleader for Devens, 42, who previously competed on seasons 38 and 50 of Survivor. “I know people love Devens, and he was great at Survivor,” she shared with Entertainment Weekly at the time. “This ain’t Survivor, honey. This here [is] Big Brother.” Chen Moonves called some of Devens' early moves “terrible” before adding, “I was like, ‘Go back to the island, dude! I’m gonna snuff out your flame.’” Now that Devens is in the final three with Taylor Brown and Drew Campbell, Chen Moonves is happy to give credit where credit is due. “I've been working it out between me and Jesus, and he's telling me, ‘Love one another,’ and he's telling me, ‘Thou shalt not judge,’ and I think he's teaching me a lesson for that reason. I think God is going to say, ‘All right, we've got to have Rick Devens win it,’” Chen Moonves told Us. “Don't forget he's older. He has a wife. He has two little kids. They were rooting for him. You want a guy to be able to provide for his family. … We’ll see.” Before the Big Brother jury casts their votes on Thursday evening, Chen Moonves is proud of the final three for making it so far in an always unpredictable game. After having a front-row seat to all the shocking evictions and unexpected moves, the host of summer’s addictive reality show doesn’t even know who could win the $750,000 cash prize. “I have butterflies in my stomach,” she said. “It's anyone's game. I'm so excited, and I'm happy no matter who wins because I'm very happy with this final three.” After this season of Big Brother featured two former Survivor contestants (Dee Valladares also competed), Us asked Chen Moonves whether any other players should be sent to Fiji to experience host Jeff Probst’s popular CBS show. Without hesitation, Chen Moonves recommended Kamu Kirk. “I think he could crush it. He's an athlete. I don't think he's scared of the elements,” she said. “I'd like to see Kamu. I'd also love to see Yash [Patel]. I think he's hysterical and a great competitor. I don't know if I want to see Angela [Murray] because I love her, but I think they would edit her too much. I love her on live feeds. I'd love to see Lala [Verrett]. She's fierce. She won the wall [competition]. Let's see what she's got on the island.” Big Brother’s season finale airs on CBS Thursday, October 1, at 8 p.m. ET.

Chad Lowe's Heartfelt Words About Fatherhood Resurface After Tragic Loss New

Chad Lowe's Heartfelt Words About Fatherhood Resurface After Tragic Loss

Chad Lowe gushed about being a girl dad two years before the tragic death of his 13-year-old daughter, Fiona. “I’m a girl dad. It’s so interesting because [I’m] always wanting to have my own experiences and not live in the shadow or follow in the footsteps of somebody,” Lowe, 58, said during a 2024 appearance on the “Still Here” podcast. “I get the experience of being a girl dad,” the Pretty Little Liars alum continued. “I feel like having daughters is such an incredible privilege.” Lowe, who shares Fiona and daughters Mabel, 17, and Nixie, 10, with wife Kim Painter, added that although there are “struggles” associated with raising three girls, the experience has continued to teach him ways to see the world differently. “I look at the world from really their perspective, and I see the world and a lot of the injustices in the world from their perspective,” he explained. “It’s not all doom and gloom. A bombshell investigation by the Guardian found sweeping price discrepancies at multiple locations across the country.  The probe found that customers were being charged more at checkout for items that were being advertised at lower prices on shelves, sale signs or gas-station marquees. The report noted a customer, Marco Cruz, who pulled into a Circle K in McAllen, Texas and grabbed a pack of beef and jalapeño cheese sticks that were priced at $3.99 on the shelf. Once Cruz hit the counter, they rang up at $4.19. He asked the employee to adjust the price and got a flat no. Cruz told The Guardian that in the last six months, similar price disparities had happened to him at other convenience stores at least five times. Multiple shoppers across 17 states have been overcharged at 7-Eleven and Circle K Manuel Turcios / FacebookThe 29-year-old isn’t alone in his frustration — shoppers all across Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Colorado, Utah and New York have experienced massive price inconsistencies between the two giant chains. The report found Circle K failed 35% of price-accuracy inspections in Florida, 62% in North Carolina, and a colossal 82% in Columbus, Ohio, between 2023 and 2025.Convenience chain, 7-Eleven, failed 47% of inspections in Colorado and Utah and 79% in Ontario County, New York. The news organization reviewed 153 shopper complaints involving the two mega chains across 17 states. Del Harper – stock.adobe.comThe Post reached out to 7-Eleven and Circle K for comment but has not heard back.So how can you protect yourself from busting your budget — it all starts with paying close attention. The next time you are shopping, look closely at the price advertised and watch when the item gets scanned. If you spot a discrepancy, alert an employee before you pay as it may be easier to fix ahead of payment. Shoppers may also want to snap a quick picture of the advertised price as it is likely easier to get an employee to honor what’s being shown — especially if it’s a promotion.Lastly, report problems. It’s always helpful to have a record of something because if a retailer won’t fix the problem — you can take it to your local consumer-protection agency.
